On a more personal note...

I LOVE Sail Racing

Small, medium, or large boats, it does not matter. Whenever I can, I go sailing to get as much time on the water as possible in order to practice on strategy, tactics, and boat handling. Sail racing is the perfect sport for me since it involves skills that I will never fully master (like everyone else involved in the sport).

There are four areas of skills needed to win a race:

  1. Maximize the boat's speed
  2. Strategic planning of the race
  3. Tactical consideration during the race
  4. Team work and synchronization

It has all the same basic ingredients that a well-managed Business need as well, and I use what I learn in sailing in my professional work on a daily basis. A perfect match!

I LOVE Watch Movements

A strange thing to love, I know. But for me a watch movement is an interesting combination of brilliant engineering, precision and aesthetics.  A well-made watch is a piece of art.

But that is not the only reason I love these things. The business of watches and watch movements is an interesting one with several paradigm shifts that give insight into how technology and customer demands can impact strategic choices for companies over time.

Quartz technology, smart watches, Asian competitors and a wide-spread grey market issue makes the business of watches a very good source for strategic learning in other industries as well. Art and business combined!
